You must have passed Module 1 before going on to take the module 2 test. You can book both modules at the same time but, if you do not pass module 1 you must wait 3 working days before you can retake it.
You can take Module 1 and Module 2 on the same day but there is a risk of losing your training and test fees for that part if you fail Module 1. Failing Module 2 will require a minimum wait of 10 working days before being able to try again. The 10 working days is to give riders further time to work on the areas that were highlighted in the test.
Module 2 the on-road practical riding test: what happens?
The Module 2 test normally takes about 40 minutes and includes:
- an eyesight check
- show me, tell me Vehicle safety questions
- road riding with the examiner following
- independent riding from about 10 minutes of the overall test time
You must bring your module 1 pass certificate to the module 2 test, plus all the documents you had to bring to the module 1 test.
Passing the eyesight test is a legal requirement
Eyesight Check
You will have to read a number plate from +20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate or +20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate New-style number plates start with 2 letters followed by 2 numbers, for example AB51 ABC.
You will fail your riding test if you fail the eyesight check and will not be allowed to go out on to the roads.
- Show me, Tell me’ Questions
- You will be asked 2 vehicle safety questions known as the ‘show me, tell me Questions. These assess that you know how to conduct basic safety checks.
- Road riding – you will ride in various road and traffic conditions, but not on motorways. You will be asked to conduct:
- Normal stops, an angle start (pulling out from behind a parked vehicle), a hill start where possible and ride according to the Highway Code in all other aspects of the road ride and conditions you may encounter. The examiner will give you directions using a radio. They will normally follow you on a motorcycle.
- Driving test routes are not published, so you cannot check them before your test.
- Independent riding–you will have about 10 minutes of independent riding. This is designed to assess your ability to ride safely while making your own decisions and reading signs and lane markings.
- You can ask the examiner to repeat the directions if you forget them – you will not fail the test if you go off the route. You cannot use sat nav. on the motorcycle test
